Gallery: Robin Hood's Bay

Situated on the North Yorkshire coast of the UK, between Whitby and Scarborough is the beautiful village of Robin Hood's Bay. The numerous cottages are very closely built around the winding road which ends in a slipway, after it follows a steep ravine down to the ocean.

Records indicate that the village probably dates from somewhere in the 15th century. It was once a fishing village, but during the 18th century and early 19th century it was better know for the smuggling activities that were prevalent there. The layout of the village was ideal; between the cottages are many secret hiding places, bolt holes, secret passages and alleyways.

Robin Hood's Bay from Ravenscar

Robin Hood's Bay from the hamlet of Ravenscar, in North Yorkshire, England. The view, punctuated by wisps of wood smoke, shows both the bay and the distant village, which are both called Robin Hood's Bay. The bay is surrounded by steep cliffs and wonderful countryside and the prolific gorse bushes, added welcome splashes of yellow to the lovely landscape.

New Road, Robin Hood's Bay

The very steep New Road, which is the main route in and out of the picturesque coastal village of Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire, England. A few people are pictured walking this main route, some take the pavement and steps and some choose the road, but either one can be an exhausting experience.

Robin Hood's Bay, Harbour

This is the point where the main street ends in a slipway to the ocean. At low tide around three miles of beach is exposed, but the tide turns rapidly and can catch out the unwary. At high tide the ocean comes nearly all the way up the slipway, and during storms it can even creep up the main street. The location is Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, England.
